Obituary for Philip Morris Bowers

Philip M. Bowers, 79, of Ranson, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2018, at home while under the care of his family and Hospice. Born September 29, 1938, he was the son of the late John William Bowers, Sr. and Minnie Norrington Bowers Linton, of Martinsburg.
Philip was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Class of 1956. He was a member of the West Virginia University, Class of 1960, earning a Bachelor of Music on a full Drum Major Scholarship, a position he held in the WVU Band for four years. He earned a Master of Arts in Education from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
He was an accomplished professional musician starting at the age of 14, and later played in jazz bands in the Martinsburg and Hagerstown areas, and toured Europe performing.
Sharing his love of music, Philip began his music teaching career at Victory High School, Clarksburg, and later taught at Martinsburg High School and at Loudoun Valley High School, Purcellville, Virginia. In addition to his career in music, he served in the US Army Reserves, obtaining the rank of Captain.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Havonda L. Shaver Bowers; 4 daughters: Carol Malatt, and husband Doug, of Martinsburg, Wendy Bowers, of New Bern, North Carolina, Katherine Bowers-Pennington, and husband Winston, of Clayton, North Carolina, and Ellen Davis, and husband Thomas, of Inwood; son-in-law, David Matieszyn, also of Inwood; sister, Jennie Kief, of Martinsburg; 16 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John P. Bowers, and sister, Doris Whitacre.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 am, Friday, June 22, 2018, at the Rosedale Cemetery with the Pastor Michael Staubs officiating. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
