Obituary for Charles Doug Tucker

Charles Douglas Tucker passed peacefully at WVU Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV Sunday April 14, surrounded by family and a dear friend. Born, September 17, 1940 in Martinsburg, he is survived by son Kyle Douglas Tucker and wife Cris of St. Thomas, PA; son Kory Layne Tucker and wife Lara of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren Kenzie Tucker, Camden Tucker, Colt Tucker, Courtney Bert and Cara Bender. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death his parents Charles E and Dolla (Ingram) Tucker, and his bride of 57 years, Roxie Royce (Ambrose) Tucker of Martinsburg.

He shared a lifelong love of sports with his family as an athlete, coach and mentor. Doug was a 1958 graduate of Martinsburg High School where he excelled in athletics as a two-year All-State Baseball player, while playing baseball and basketball all 4 years. He is also a 1964 graduate of Shepherd College (Physical Education) where he also played baseball and basketball all 4 years.
As his children grew, Doug coached in the Martinsburg Little League and Junior League. In 1984, he managed the Junior League All Star Team to the West Virginia District Championship and Southern Region Runner up position, among the best 16 teams in the nation. Many of his players proceeded to high school, college and professional athletics in several sports.

His work life was accentuated by a love for youth, providing guidance and opportunity for those with whom he came in contact. During and shortly after college, he served as a counselor with the Martinsburg Parks & Recreation Department, running summer leagues in basketball and other sports where several of his charges would participate in amateur sports long into their lives. His retirement followed a career as a Juvenile Probation Officer and Court Director in the Virginia Court System. He frequently recruited volunteers in the Virginia inmate population to speak with at-risk youth about the consequences of repeated criminal behavior.
His retirement was punctuated by many trips and cruises with his bride and attending the school activities of his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf with his sons, grandson, and many friends. Most recently in January 2019 he recorded 25,000 steps per day at Disney World on his fit bit.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, WV.
