Obituary for Thomas Hiser Harman
Thomas Hiser Harman, 54, of Centerville, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Martinsburg on September 6, 1964, Tom was the son of the late William Benton Harman and Betty Pratt Harman.
Tom was a 1982 graduate of Martinsburg High School, where he was a proud member of the Martinsburg High School Marching Band and the Good Times Show Choir. Tom received his Bachelors’ degree in Journalism from West Virginia University in 1986 and a Masters’ degree in History from Shippensburg University in 1992.
Tom was a career journalist, starting at The Martinsburg Journal. Tom's successful writing career included lengthy stints at nationally known publications such as Inside FAA, New Fuels Report, Community Development Digest, and Best Week Global Edition at AM Best Company, where he was employed at the time of his passing.
Tom was a very talented, caring man who never hesitated to express his love of family and pride in his hometown community. He entertained countless people with his seemingly endless fount of knowledge and fair, reasoned, opinions on West Virginia sports and the various issues of the day.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Susan; his two children Samuel Morgan Harman and Lucille Irene Harman; one sister, Justine Elaine Davis of Martinsburg; two brothers, William J. Harman of Kearneysville and Ronald M. Harman of Martinsburg; and four nieces and one nephew.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home
with Reverend Dr. Rufus Burton officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Road in Martinsburg, WV.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Martinsburg High School, 701 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
