Obituary for Edward Fike Arnett MD

Edward Fike Arnett, MD, died peacefully on April 3, 2019, at his residence surrounded by family and friends.

Dr. Arnett was born on September 15, 1945, in Rowlesburg, WV, the son of the only local physician, Jerome Cayton Arnett, MD, and local mathematics teacher, Maye Fike Arnett. He graduated from Rowlesburg High School and Bridgewater College (1967). He continued his education at West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, PA. Dr. Arnett came to Martinsburg in 1976 where he spent 37 years in private pediatric practice. He was an active member of the medical staff of City Hospital and held the position of consulting staff for the Pediatric Department for the WVUH-East Hospitals. He was president of the medical staff from 1995 to 1997, and chairman of the Department of Medicine in 1986. Dr. Arnett served on the Panhandle Home Health Board of Directors, board member for the City Hospital Foundation and a board member for the Norman W. Smith Education Loan Trust.

Dr. Arnett's teaching positions have included WVU School of Medicine, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Eastern Division WVU School of Medicine, faculty physician, preceptor, and WVU Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. He was a member of WV Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatrics WVU School of Medicine Alumni Association. He was also a past president of the Eastern Panhandle Medical Society and past council member of the WV State Medical Association.

Dr. Arnett is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nina Miller Arnett, daughter Dr. Shonda M. Asaad and husband Marc of Swansboro NC, son Nathan Edward Arnett and wife Dr. Bonnie Bailey of Charleston, WV, and daughter Tiffany Anne Arnett of Martinsburg. Pierce and Dimitri Asaad, Benjamin and Lauren Arnett, and Ezra Arnett will greatly miss their "Dad Ed." Dr. Arnett is also survived by brothers Dr. Jerome C. Arnett and wife Heidi of Helvetia, WV, and Dr. Carroll Arnett and wife Susan of Maple Grove, MN, brother in law William Listh of Sterling, VA, and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Colette Listh.

Dr. Arnett was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Martinsburg, the Martinsburg Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and the Shepherd University Masterworks Chorale. He enjoyed life. He loved fishing, skiing, woodworking, and cruising. He was a man of multiple talents -- if something were broken, he could fix it.

In his retirement, Dr. Arnett enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife and family. He also enjoyed singing with the Blue Grey Chorus, and the Plaids Quartet.

As per Dr. Arnett’s request, his body was donated to WVU School of Medicine.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at Brown's Funeral Home on W. King Street in Martinsburg on Thursday, April 11. A service celebrating Dr. Arnett's life will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church at 200 W. King Street on April 12 at 11a.m.. Contributions can be made to Hospice of the Panhandle or Bridgewater College in Bridgewater VA.
