Dorothy Elizabeth Bowers departed this life on June 3, 2019, at the Hospice Inpatient Facility. She was born on Feb. 15, 1928, as the child of the late James Cromwell and Helen Light Cromwell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ronald 'Bud' Bowers, who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Cromwell; sisters, Betty Everhart and Helena Huffman; and son, Ronald Burton Bowers, Jr.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Henry and husband Patrick Henry III; daughter-in-law, Diana Bowers; seven grandchildren, Patrick Henry IV (Cara), David Henry (Erin), Dane Henry (Amanda), Tiffany Stark (Sean), Matt Bowers, Jessica Bowers and step-grandson, Shane Miller; six great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Patrick IV and Athena Henry, Cade and Declan Stark and Gwynedd Ellis; sister, Evelyn Brenner; sister-in-law, Dorcas Cromwell.
Dorothy graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1946 and entered the nursing program at Kings Daughters Hospital, graduating in 1949. Following graduation she served as a nurse at Kings Daughters Hospital, taught licensed practical nursing at Ramer School and at James Rumsey. She developed the Nursing Arts Program for high school seniors, and in 1976 was selected as the Outstanding Vocational Teacher in West Virginia. She was active in the Kings Daughters Alumni Association where she served as treasurer.
After retiring, she divided her time between her church and family. She was a 50 plus year member of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg and was a ruling elder. She was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Presbyterian Women and was Moderator of Presbyterian Women of the Shenandoah Presbytery.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a caregiver for her great-grandchildren well into her 80's. She loved reading and baking, and even won the Apple Harvest Pie Baking contest.
The family wishes to thank the staff and personnel at The Crossings of Martinsburg and the Hospice of the Panhandle for their care and service.
Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6 at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church 11 a.m. Friday, June 7. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 220 South Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 333 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
The family requests attendees to wear purple or a bright color in celebration of Dot's life.
