Wayne was born on September 4, 1950 in Waynesboro, PA to Sidney and Charlotte Reed Mong. He grew up on his family’s farm near Waynesboro, PA and Smithsburg, MD. He graduated from Smithsburg High School in 1968. He married Roberta “Robbie” Diehl in 1969. After graduating high school, he was employed at Grove Manufacturing as a welder until he was able to make his love for farming a full-time career. After several years of managing a dairy farm in Ringgold, MD, Wayne and Robbie purchased their dream farm along the Opequon Creek near Martinsburg,WV in 1977 with their 3 children. Rolling Acres Farm in WV became their new home. For him farming was a family affair. All 3 children grew up helping on the dairy farm. His theory was “learn by doing”, so that’s what the kids had to do. They learned hard work by example, Wayne was no stranger to hard work and his kids learned that quickly. His children remember him as a kind, gentle, driven and big-hearted father, who encouraged them to do their best and pursue their goals.
Wayne was an accomplished farmer and business owner and one of the most generous persons you would ever meet. To those who didn’t know him, were frightened by his stature, to those who did, knew him as a teddy bear! Wayne was a quiet, kind-hearted soul, and his grandkids were the center of his world. He always put his family first and himself second. He loved farming and his Holstein cows and couldn’t wait to get on the tractor to plant the corn or bale hay.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday June 28th at 10AM at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg WV, with a reception to follow. Pastor John Herbst will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wayne’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ringgold Church of Christ at 14420 Barkdoll Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
