Obituary for James Stewart Roberts

James Stewart Roberts, CMS USAF RET., 87, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at home surrounded by his family, under the care of hospice.

Born August 15, 1932 in Roane Co., WV he was the son of the late Guy Roberts and Willie Hutcherson Roberts.

He was the first Chief Flight Engineer at the 167th ANG Martinsburg. During the 20+ years of flying, he amassed more than 11,000 hours of flying time. He retired as Chief of Field Maintenance. He was Membership Chairman of the 167th Retiree’s Association, founding member of the 167th TFR FCU and the Dirty Dozen Social Club.

As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping with family and friends. He was an avid Mountaineer fan and supported Martinsburg HS for many years. He was a Midget League football coach of the Colts from the late 60’s to mid 70’s and a 50 + year member of the Pikeside United Methodist Church. He was always available to help family, coworkers, friends and neighbors when a need arose. He donated to numerous charities with heart felt generosity. In 2017, he was recognized by the Berkeley County Council for his dedication to duty, honor to God and Country and service above self.

James is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Charlotte Nell Shiflett Roberts; two sons, Michael Roberts and wife Jill, Scott Roberts and wife, Judi; two daughters, Beth Lentz and Amy Zombro and husband, David; six grandchildren, Brad, Mark and Kevin Roberts, Renee Burkey, Staci Lentz, Karen Thomas; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Roberts; and two sisters, Nancy Herring and Dorcas Aretz.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Bill Ball officiating at the funeral home. Military honors graveside service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery.
