Obituary for Joseph Alampi Jr.

Joseph Alampi Jr.
Joseph Alampi Jr., “Sweetie” who, in his short life, touched so many and refused to be defined by or brought down by his illness finally succumbed to acute myeloid leukemia on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. He bravely fought a 13 year battle but died peacefully and in no pain at his home with his wife Elaine by his side.

He was born March 10, 1960 in Rochester, NY, to Mary Yvonne Filitti and the late Giuseppe Alampi. His dad was an immigrant from Reggio Calabria, Italy and Joe grew up in the largely Italian-American town of East Rochester, NY. He graduated from East Rochester High School in 1978. In April 2002 he met Elaine Mollica on Match.com and on October 11, 2003 they were married at Hope Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arthur Dueker and started their life together in Greece, NY. In 2007 they both moved down to Martinsburg, WV where her family had recently settled.

Joe was a happy, friendly man with a pure open heart. Although he fought leukemia for 13 years he never, ever became bitter or angry. With his wife, he gladly welcomed family and friends into his home for their many parties. He loved the Beatles, football, computers, Frank Sinatra and any movie musical. Mostly he loved his wife and family.
For twenty-five years, prior to his diagnosis, he worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Penfield, NY where he had many friends. He proudly served in the Naval Reserve for six years starting in the 1980s.

A member of both Sons of Italy in America and the Knights of Columbus council #10756 he enjoyed the time in these organizations and also with his fellow parishioners at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church.

In addition to his mother in Fairport, NY he is survived by his wife Elaine Frances Mollica Alampi; two sisters, Maria Kraska and husband Juergen of Walworth, NY and Mary Jo Scates and husband Steve of Macedon, NY., two sisters and brothers-in law, Karen and Greg Hilliary and Jennifer and Dr. John J. Mollica, all of Falling Waters, WV and mother and father-in- law Audrey and John E. Mollica of Martinsburg, WV. Also missing him will be his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and of course his beloved dachshund Toni.

Friends and family will be received from 3:00PM to 5:00PM on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel, 287 Arden Nollville Road, Inwood, WV 25428. A funeral mass will be offered at 11:00AM at St. Leo Catholic Church, 2109 Sulphur Springs Rd, Inwood, WV 25428, celebrant Fr. Alfred Obiudu. Interment will be in the St. Leo Cemetery with reception immediately following in the social hall.

The family asks that in lieu of flower donations be made in Joe’s name to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Society www.lls.org or Dachshund Rescue of North America, www.drna.org.
